Fold is a new diptych by artist Amy Pleasant, created in a very small edition of 12. Pleasant’s two silhouetted human forms - one energetically collapsing on itself, the other powerfully reclining - draw inspiration from the angst and charm of everyday life. The pair see-saws between the disquietude and strength inherent in individualism, the balance found in their pairing.
Created intermittently between 2022 and 2024, Amy Pleasant worked with Master Papermaker Rachel Gladfelter on Fold, generated entirely in the wet papermaking process. This piece highlights the nuance of paper pulp; its structure in a smooth graphic application and its possibility for energetic brushy movement within a self-enfolding form. For its creation, the artist both sprayed black pigmented pulp onto a wet sheet and hand brushed blue pigmented pulp along its surface. Consequently, each number in the edition has variability due to this hand applied process.
